Title II of the Higher Education Act, as amended in 1998, holds institutions accountable for preparing teachers who have appropriate teaching skills and are highly competent in the academic content areas in which the teachers plan to teach. Section 207 of Title II of the Higher Education Act mandates that the U.S. Department of Education collect data on state assessments, other requirements, and standards for teacher certification and licensure, as well as data on the performance of teacher preparation programs.
The information below provides an overview of Gallaudet University's undergraduate teacher education program. The Educational Testing Services (ETS) documents present Praxis licensure test pass-rate information as reported by ETS for first-time completers of our state approved teacher education program. ETS also reports pass rate information for program completers three years after they complete the program in Follow-Up Cohort Pass Rates.
Program Information for Academic Year 2007-2008:
- Total number of students enrolled: 41
- Total number of students in programs of supervised student teaching: 12
- Total number of supervising faculty for the teacher preparation program: 6
- The student/faculty ratio: 2:1
- The average number of hours per week required of student participation was 35 hours. The total number of weeks of supervised student teaching required is 10 weeks. The total number of hours is 350 hours.
- The teacher preparation program is currently approved by the District of Columbia.
- The teacher preparation program is not currently designated as "low-performing" by the state as defined by Section 208(a) of the HEA of 1998.
